Rent or Buy Calculator
Enter what it costs to buy and to rent, and how many times you will use it. The tool adds up both and shows which is cheaper and where buying starts to pay off.
Compare buying and renting
Everything is worked out on this device. Nothing you enter is saved or sent. Every amount is one you type in, and no live prices are used.
Example
Buying for 100 and selling it later for 40 costs 60 net. Renting costs 12 plus 3 delivery, 15 per use. After 10 uses, buying costs 60 and renting 150, so buying is cheaper by 90, and it already pays off from 4 uses. Press “Load an example” to try it.
How it works
Buying costs the price, delivery and storage, minus what you sell it for, plus supplies per use. Renting costs the fee, delivery and supplies for every use. The tool compares the totals for your number of uses and finds the smallest number of uses where buying is equal or cheaper.
It is a reference only. It adds up the amounts you type and does not recommend buying or renting.
Frequently asked questions
What should I include in the costs?
For buying, enter the price, any delivery or setup, supplies you use each time, and storage if you keep it. For renting, enter the fee per use, delivery or pickup each time, and supplies if they are not included. Use your own real prices.
What does break-even mean here?
It is the smallest number of uses at which the total cost of buying is equal to or lower than renting. If renting is cheaper or equal on every use, buying never catches up, and the tool says so.
What is left out?
Tax, discounts, deposits you get back, late or damage charges, whether the item is available to rent, and repairs after buying are not included. The resale amount is only a guess, so try it at 0 too.
