First Month Living Costs

Enter your deposit, rent, one-time costs and monthly living costs, and see the cash you need in the first month.

Add up the first month

Add up the cash you need in the first month of living alone: deposit, first rent, one-time costs and a month of living costs. Every amount is typed by you, because there is no average that fits every place. Nothing is saved or sent.

Amounts are worked out to two decimals (cents).

Furniture and appliances you need to buy (optional)

Example

With a $2,400 deposit, $1,200 rent, $150 utilities, $600 in fees, $400 for moving, a $300 bed, a $150 desk, $300 of food, $50 for the phone and $80 for transport, you need $5,630.00 in cash: $2,400 deposit, $1,450 of one-time costs and $1,780 of monthly costs. Press “Load an example” to try it.

How it works

The total is the deposit, plus one-time costs (fees, moving and the furniture you tick), plus one month of rent, utilities, food, phone and transport. Every amount is typed by you, because no average fits every city.

The deposit is usually returned when you leave, less any deductions, so the real cost is lower than the cash you need up front. Add any tax, insurance or other fee in your contract to the matching line.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the deposit included?

It is cash you have to pay up front. The tool shows it on its own line so you can see that part may come back later.

Which furniture should I tick?

Tick only what you must buy, and enter its price. Anything you already own, or that comes with the home, can be left unticked.

Does it use average prices?

No. It adds only the numbers you type, so check prices where you live first.
