Real Hourly Pay

Enter your hourly pay, the hours you work, and what the job costs you in travel, food and time. The tool shows what you really earn per hour.

Work out the real hourly pay

Everything is worked out on this device. Nothing you enter is saved or sent. Taxes and deductions are not looked up: enter your own percentage if you want them counted.

0.1 to 24

A whole number from 1 to 7

Enter the share withheld from your pay, 0 to 60. Blank counts as 0.

Example

At 15 an hour for 6 hours with a 30-minute unpaid break, 3 days a week, with 1 hour of travel, 6 for travel and 8 for food each day, you earn 247.50 a week and keep 205.50. That is about 9.79 an hour counting travel time and 11.42 without it. Press “Load an example” to try it.

How it works

Pay is hourly pay × paid hours × days. Deductions you enter and the daily travel and food costs are taken off, and what is left is divided by the hours at work, plus travel time for the first figure.

It is a reference only. Overtime, tips and bonuses are not counted, and the tax percentage is only what you enter.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the real hourly pay differ from my hourly pay?

Your hourly pay ignores what it costs to get to work and the time it takes. Travel and food cost money, and the trip takes hours you are not paid for. Counting them shows what each hour of the job is really worth to you.

What do I enter for tax and deductions?

Enter the share of your pay that is withheld, as a percentage from 0 to 60. The tool does not look up tax rules, which differ by country and by job. Leave it blank to ignore deductions.

How is a break handled?

If the break is unpaid, it is taken off the paid hours but still counted as time at work. If it is paid, it counts as paid time. Choose the one that matches your pay slip.
