Recipe Scaler

Paste a recipe’s ingredient list, enter how many it serves and how many you need, and every amount is scaled for you.

Scale a recipe

Start each line with the amount, e.g. “1 1/2 cups milk” or “2 eggs”.

Example: a recipe for 4

Halved and doubled
Original (4)For 2For 8
2 cups all-purpose flour1 cup all-purpose flour4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar1/3 cup sugar1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tsp baking powder1/2 tsp baking powder2 tsp baking powder
3 eggs1 1/2 eggs6 eggs

How to scale a recipe

Put one ingredient per line, starting with the amount. Whole numbers, decimals and fractions (1/2, 1 1/2, ½) all work. Lines without an amount, like “salt to taste,” are kept as they are.

Cups, tablespoons and teaspoons are rounded to the nearest common fraction so you can measure them. Items you count, like eggs or onions, are rounded to the nearest half.

Frequently asked questions

How do I halve a recipe with 3 eggs?

Use 1 1/2 eggs: beat the eggs, then measure out half of the third egg, about 1 1/2 tablespoons for a large egg. The scaler rounds eggs and other whole items to the nearest half.

What is half of 3/4 cup?

3/8 cup, which is 6 tablespoons. The scaler shows it as about 1/3 cup; for baking, measuring 6 tablespoons is more accurate.

Do baking times change when I double a recipe?

Often yes. A deeper pan takes longer to cook through, while two pans of the original size usually keep the original time. Check doneness early and adjust.
