Examples

  • Butter: refrigerator 1–2 months, freezer 6–9 months
  • Cheese (hard such as cheddar, swiss, block parmesan): refrigerator 6 months / 3–4 weeks, freezer 6 months

How to read the times

  • From purchase times count from the day you bought it, unopened.
  • After opening times start once the package is open.
  • Fridge times assume 40°F (4°C) or colder. Freezer times assume 0°F (−18°C) and are for quality, not safety.

Perishable food should not sit at room temperature for more than two hours. When in doubt, throw it out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between “Best if Used By”, “Sell-By” and “Use-By”?

“Best if Used By” is when a product has its best flavor or quality. “Sell-By” tells the store how long to display it. “Use-By” is the last date for peak quality. None of them are safety dates, except “Use-By” on infant formula.

Is food safe to eat after the date on the package?

USDA says that, except for infant formula, a product should still be safe if handled properly until signs of spoilage appear, such as an off odor, flavor or texture. If it has spoiled, don’t eat it.

How long can food stay frozen?

Food kept at 0°F stays safe indefinitely. The freezer times here are for best quality; after that, food may be dry or lose flavor.

How should I thaw frozen food?

In the refrigerator, in cold water in a leak-proof bag, or in the microwave. Never on the counter or in hot water. Cook food thawed in cold water or the microwave before refreezing it.
