Closet Rod Capacity Calculator
Find out how many shirts, coats and dresses fit on a closet rod before you move or buy a wardrobe, and which items hang too long for the space below.
Check your closet rod
Example
A 48 in rod with 0.4 in hangers and a 0.4 in gap holds 30 shirts at 0.8 in thick (36 in) and 6 winter coats at 3 in thick (20.4 in) only if the rod is longer: the tool shows that the coats do not all fit and how many are left over.
How it works
Each item takes the larger of its hanger or its own thickness on the hanger, plus the gap you leave between items. The tool fills the rod in the order of your rows and tells you how many of each group fit, how much rod is left and how many more of your thinnest items would fit.
If you enter the space below the rod and each item’s hanging length, it also flags items that would touch the floor or the shelf below. There is no standard clothing thickness, so measure a few items on their hangers. The rod’s weight limit is not checked.
Frequently asked questions
How thick is a shirt on a hanger?
It varies a lot by fabric and season. Hang a few items, squeeze them gently together and measure, then divide by the number of items.
Should I leave a gap?
A small gap makes clothes easier to take out and wrinkle less. Try 0 and a small gap to compare.
Does it check rod strength?
No. Heavy coats can bend a long rod; check the closet maker’s limit.
