Mattress Elevator Fit Checker
Moving a mattress into an apartment? Enter the mattress and the elevator door and car to see whether it can go in standing on end, and whether folding it would help.
Check the elevator
Example
A queen mattress (60 × 80 × 10 in) in an elevator with a 36 × 84 in door and a 64 × 55 × 90 in car fits standing on end, with 4 in to spare at the door height. A lower door or a thicker wrapped mattress makes it tight.
How it works
The tool treats the mattress as a rigid board. To get in, the mattress stands on its end: its length must pass the door height, its thickness the door width, and it must stand inside the car. Its width must fit along the car’s width or depth, or diagonally across the floor, which is only an estimate.
If the maker says the mattress can be folded, the tool also checks it folded in half (half the length, twice the thickness). Bending, people carrying it, protective padding and building rules are not modeled, so a result is never a guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I measure the elevator height?
Measure to the bottom of the ceiling light cover or vent, not to the ceiling panel, and the door to the bottom of the frame.
Can I fold any mattress?
No. Fold it only if the maker says it can be folded. Many mattresses must stay flat.
What if it does not fit?
Ask your movers about the stairs, a freight elevator or another way in before moving day.
