Example

40 clothing items, 30 books, 25 kitchen items, 8 pairs of shoes and 2 comforters come to about 2 medium boxes for clothes, 2 small boxes for books, 2 small for kitchen items, 2 medium for shoes and 1 large for bedding.

How it works

The tool uses simple site assumptions: about 20 clothing items or 5 pairs of shoes per medium box, about 20 books or 15 kitchen items per small box, and about 2 comforters per large box. Choose thin and light (×0.7) or bulky (×1.3) to adjust. Each type is rounded up on its own, so mixing items can need fewer boxes.

Box sizes differ between stores and movers, so small, medium and large are for comparison only. Pack books and dishes in small boxes so they stay light enough to lift. This is not a mover’s quote.

Frequently asked questions

Why not estimate by number of rooms?

Two homes with the same rooms can have very different amounts of stuff, so the tool counts what you actually own.

How much tape do I need?

The tool allows about 3 m (10 ft) of tape per box for taping the top and bottom.

Are box sizes standard?

No. Check the sizes sold where you live and how much weight each box can hold.
