Example
For a 75 cm table with a 3 cm top, a 45 cm seat, no cushion and a person 170 cm tall, the tabletop is 30 cm above the seat and the seat is 27 cm below the underside of the top. Both are inside the 25 to 30 cm guide ranges, and a 45 cm seat is inside the 42 to 45 cm band for that height. Press “Load an example” to try it.
How it works
Two gaps are measured: the tabletop surface minus the seat, and the seat up to the underside of the tabletop. A Korean furniture maker suggests 25 to 30 cm for the first, and IKEA suggests 25 to 30 cm for the second and a seat height band by the height of the person (under 160 cm: 40 to 42 cm, 160 to 175 cm: 42 to 45 cm, over 175 cm: 45 to 48 cm). A cushion counts at the thickness it has when you sit on it.
The tool says whether each gap is in range, too small or too large, and about how much to raise or lower the seat. Comfortable heights depend on your body and how you sit, so use the ranges as a guide, not a rule.

What gap should there be between a table and a chair?
A Korean furniture maker says a difference of 25 to 30 cm between the tabletop and the seat is comfortable when you rest your arms, and IKEA suggests 25 to 30 cm from the seat to the underside of the table. The two measure from different points, so look at both. The right height still depends on your body.
How do I count a cushion?
Add the thickness the cushion has when it is squashed under you. A thick cushion compresses more than you expect, so measure it while you sit on it.
How do I measure the seat height?
Measure straight up from the floor to the highest point of the middle of the seat, not to the top of the backrest. Measure the table from the floor to the top surface.
