How the dates are worked out
Lunar dates are converted with the Korean lunar calendar data published by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute. Substitute holidays follow the Regulations on Holidays of Government Offices. Days off in a row include the weekend and any substitute holiday next to the holiday.
For a lunar birthday, leap months are treated as the regular month, and if that month has no 30th, the 29th is used.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Seollal and Chuseok move every year?
They follow the lunar calendar: Seollal is the 1st day of the 1st lunar month and Chuseok the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Each is a three-day holiday: the day before, the day itself and the day after.
What is a substitute holiday?
If Seollal or Chuseok falls on a Sunday or overlaps another public holiday on a weekday, the next working day becomes a day off. Overlapping a Saturday doesn’t count.
Is it a good time to travel to Korea?
Millions of people travel to their hometowns, so trains, buses and highways get busy and some shops close. Book transport early and check opening hours.
