How it is calculated

Yearly car tax = engine size × the rate per cc for its size band, or a flat ₩100,000 for electric and hydrogen cars. From year three the age discount applies. Local education tax adds 30% of the car tax. Each half-year bill is worked out separately.

This calculator is for private (non-commercial) passenger cars only.

Frequently asked questions

When do I pay car tax in Korea?

The yearly tax is split into two bills: June (January–June) and December (July–December). If you pay the whole year in advance, you get a discount for the remaining period.

How much less is it for an older car?

From the car’s third year, the tax drops 5% each year until it reaches 50% off in year 12, and it stays at 50% after that. The year of first registration counts as year one.

How much do I save by paying in advance?

For 2026 the prepayment discount is 5%, applied only for the days left in the year after the month you pay. Paying in January saves about 4.58%, in March about 3.77% and in September about 1.26%.

How are hybrids and electric cars taxed?

Hybrids are taxed by engine size like other cars. Electric and hydrogen cars pay a flat ₩100,000 a year plus 30% local education tax, with the same age discount.
