Home Cooking vs Delivery

Enter how many meals a week you order in, what a delivered meal and a home-cooked meal cost on average, and how many you would cook instead. The tool shows what you could save a month and a year.

Compare the costs

Everything is worked out on this device. Nothing you enter is saved or sent.

0 to 21

Cannot be more than the meals per week above.

Example

Say you order 3 meals a week at 15 each and a home-cooked meal costs 5. If you cook 2 of those 3 at home, you save about 86.90 a month, or 1,042.86 a year. Press “Load an example” to try it.

How it works

The yearly cost now is meals per week × cost per delivered meal × 52.14 weeks. After you cook some at home, those meals are priced at the home-cooked cost. The difference, divided by 12, is the monthly saving.

It is a reference calculation. It uses only your own numbers and does not include your time or any change in what you eat.

Frequently asked questions

What do I enter for the cost of a meal?

Enter the average you really pay for one delivered meal and for one home-cooked meal. For delivery, include the delivery fee, service fees and tip. For home cooking, use what the groceries cost per meal. The tool does not guess prices, and it does not count the time you spend cooking or cleaning.

How are the monthly and yearly amounts counted?

A year is counted as 52.14 weeks and a month as a twelfth of that. Your yearly cost now is meals per week × cost per delivered meal × 52.14. After the change, the meals you replace are priced at the home-cooked cost and the rest stay at the delivery cost. The difference is the saving.

What if cooking at home costs more?

Then the tool tells you how much more per month it would cost instead of a saving. That can happen if a home-cooked meal needs expensive ingredients or leftovers are thrown away. Try a lower home-cooked cost only if it is realistic for you.

Is this advice on how to eat or budget?

No. It is a plain calculation from the numbers you enter, to help you see the size of a habit. It does not consider nutrition, health, your schedule or any shop’s prices.
