How to use the baking converter

Search for an ingredient or pick it from the list, enter the amount from your recipe and choose cups, tablespoons or teaspoons. The result shows grams and ounces. Fractions such as 1/3 or 1 1/2 are fine.

Why weigh instead of measure?

The same cup of flour can weigh quite different amounts depending on whether you spoon it in or scoop it. A scale removes that guesswork, which matters most for bread, cakes and cookies where the ratio of flour to liquid decides the texture.

Where the numbers come from

Every weight comes from King Arthur Baking’s Ingredient Weight Chart. We only list ingredients that appear in that chart and show its original serving size next to each result.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is 1 cup of flour?

One cup of all-purpose flour weighs 120 grams (about 4.2 ounces) in King Arthur Baking’s chart, measured by spooning flour into the cup and leveling it. Scooping straight from the bag packs in more flour, so weighing gives the most reliable result.

Why do different ingredients weigh different amounts per cup?

A cup measures volume, not weight. A cup of granulated sugar weighs 198 grams but a cup of flour only 120 grams, because sugar crystals pack more tightly. That is why bakers prefer a kitchen scale.

How much is a stick of butter?

One US stick of butter is 8 tablespoons, or 1/2 cup, and weighs 113 grams (4 ounces).

What size cup does this calculator use?

A US cup of 240 ml, a tablespoon of 15 ml and a teaspoon of 5 ml. The chart it is based on is written for US measuring cups.
