Chair Leg Pad Size Finder
Dining chairs scraping or scratching the floor? Measure the leg ends to find the pad size and count, and which type of pad to look at for your floor.

Example
Four chairs with square 1.25 × 1.5 in legs on a hardwood floor need 16 pads plus 4 spare. A round pad must be at least 2 in across to cover the corners, a square pad at least 1.6 in per side.
How it works
A pad must cover the face of the leg that touches the floor. A round pad on a square leg has to be as wide as the leg’s diagonal, so it is larger than the leg itself. Slip-on caps must match the leg size inside. The count is contact points per chair times chairs, plus one chair’s worth as spare.
Which pad to look at depends on the leg and the floor: splayed legs need swivel-base pads or caps, sled bases need clip-on glides, carpet needs smooth glides, and rubber caps help if the chair slides too easily. These are site rules, not a pad maker’s or floor maker’s advice.
Frequently asked questions
Should I measure the top of the leg?
No. Measure the face that touches the floor; tapered legs are thinner at the bottom.
Why does a round pad need to be bigger?
To cover a square leg’s corners, the circle must be as wide as the leg’s diagonal.
Do felt pads protect every floor?
Not always. Grit stuck in felt can scratch, so clean or replace pads and follow your floor’s care advice.
