Laundry Detergent Amount

Enter the weight of your laundry and the amount and load size printed on your detergent. The tool scales the label to your load, for liquid, powder or pods.

Work out the amount

Everything is worked out on this device. Nothing you enter is saved or sent. The label on your detergent comes first.

Use the same unit for both weights (kg or lb). Up to 30.

Number only, up to 1,000. Capsules: the number of pods.

Example

A 6 kg load with a detergent labelled 40 mL for 8 kg needs about 30 mL. For heavy soil (×1.2, this site’s assumption) that becomes 36 mL. Press “Load an example” to try it.

How it works

The label amount is multiplied by your laundry weight and divided by the load size on the label. For heavy soil it is multiplied by 1.2. Pods are rounded up to a whole number.

It is a reference only. The directions and warnings on the product come first, and the result does not promise that stains will come out.

Frequently asked questions

What do I enter for the weights and the label?

Enter the real weight of your dry laundry. Do not guess from the size of the basket, and do not use the machine’s maximum load. Then find the load size and the amount on the label of your detergent, for the type of machine you have. Use the same unit for both weights, kg or lb. The amount is a number in whatever unit the label uses, such as mL, g, fl oz or scoops. Pods are counted as a number of pods. There is no general default, because strength and the size of the cap differ between products.

How are heavy soil and pods handled?

The label amount is multiplied by your laundry weight divided by the label’s load size. Choosing heavy soil multiplies it by 1.2, which is this site’s own assumption. If the label gives amounts by soil level, choose Normal and enter that amount instead. Pods cannot be split, so the count is rounded up, but check the maker’s guide for how many pods your load size needs. Do not cut or open a pod.

Is more detergent better?

Not necessarily. Using more than the label says can leave residue and make rinsing harder. A calculated amount does not guarantee that stains come out, so pretreat stains and check the care label for the right detergent. Wool and delicates need a suitable detergent and cycle.

Does water hardness or the machine type matter?

Yes. Hard water, front- and top-loading machines and concentrated products can all change the amount, and many labels give a separate amount for each. Follow the product label first and use this tool to scale it to your load. Keep detergents and pods in their original containers, out of reach of children and pets.
