Frequently asked questions
What does ㅋㅋ mean in Korean?
It is laughter, like “lol” or “haha”. It comes from the sound 크크 (keu-keu). The more ㅋ, the harder the laugh.
Can I use these with older people?
Most texting shorthand (marked “Casual only”) is for friends your age or younger. With older people or at work, write words in full, such as 감사합니다 instead of ㄱㅅ.
Why do Koreans say “fighting”?
화이팅 (hwaiting) comes from the English word but means “You can do it!” It is used to cheer people on before an exam, a game or an interview.
