Each quiz has 10 letters. Sounds are shown in the official Revised Romanization, using the sound a consonant makes at the start of a syllable. English comparisons are only approximate, so listen to native speakers too.
Frequently asked questions
How many letters are in the Korean alphabet?
Hangul has 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels. Other letters are made by doubling or combining them, such as ㄲ or ㅘ.
Why is ㅇ silent?
Every syllable is written with a consonant first, so ㅇ holds the place before a vowel and makes no sound, as in 아 (a). At the end of a syllable it sounds like “ng”, as in 강 (gang).
How are letters put together?
Letters are grouped into syllable blocks: a consonant, a vowel and sometimes a final consonant. ㅎ + ㅏ + ㄴ makes 한 (han).
