Tile Calculator

Find how many tiles to buy for a floor or wall, including grout joints and a waste allowance. Works in feet and inches or metric.

Count tiles

Units

Example: 12

Example: 24

Fractions work, like 1/8 or 3/16. Blank = 1/8 in.

Blank = 3/8 in.

From the box label. Optional.

Blank = 10%. Diagonal layouts need more.

How to use the tile calculator

  1. Measure the width and length of the floor or wall to be tiled.
  2. Enter the tile size from the box. Fractions such as 1/8 are fine.
  3. Leave the joint and thickness blank to use 1/8 in and 3/8 in, or enter your own.
  4. Add the number of tiles per box to see how many boxes to buy.

For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles, run each one, and add the results.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra tile should I buy?

Add about 10% for cuts and breakage on a straight layout. Diagonal and herringbone patterns, or rooms with many corners, need more. Keep a few spare tiles for future repairs.

Does the grout joint change the tile count?

Slightly. Each tile takes up its own size plus one joint, so wider joints mean fewer tiles. The effect is bigger with small tiles such as mosaics.

How is the grout amount worked out?

It uses the formula MAPEI publishes for its grouts: (A + B) ÷ (A × B) × C × D × 1.6 kg per square meter, where A and B are the tile sides, C is the tile thickness and D the joint width, all in millimeters. The result is converted to pounds.
